Wes or not?

After two lessons looking at Wes Anderson’s visual style, I thought the students knew enough to be able to spot his style – so I begun the lesson with a quick quiz in which I had fifteen film stills. Some were from Anderson films, and others were not. They picked up on almost every one because of colour, composition, and mise en scene (and Bill Murray).

The next task was the students were to watch four trailers – The Darjeeling Limited, Moonrise Kingdom, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. In their groups they were to pick out the similarities between the trailers. They came up with some great ideas that included:

– Dysfunctional families

– Yellow

– A journey

– Uniforms

– Bill Murray

– A large cast of characters

– Children being mature and adults being immature

I have to say, this is a really fun unit to teach and I love how excited and passionate the students are about it!
